Value Added Tax (VAT) and sales tax calculations are a daily necessity for businesses, freelancers, accountants, and consumers across Europe and around the world. Whether you need to determine the final price of a product including VAT for a customer invoice, work backwards from a gross amount to find the pre-tax net value, or quickly compare tax rates between different EU member states for cross-border trade, our free VAT and Tax Calculator handles it all instantly. The tool supports both adding VAT to a net price (common when preparing quotes and invoices) and removing VAT from a gross price (essential when reconciling expenses or verifying supplier invoices). With one-click presets for all 27 EU member states' standard VAT rates — from Luxembourg's 17% to Hungary's 27% — plus major global tax rates including UK VAT (20%), Swiss VAT (7.7%), Australian GST (10%), Indian GST (18%), Canadian GST, Japanese consumption tax, Brazilian ICMS, and many more, you never need to remember or look up the current rate for any jurisdiction. A precise slider with 0.5% step granularity lets you dial in any custom rate for special cases or reduced-rate categories. The result panel provides a crystal-clear three-line breakdown showing the net amount, tax amount, and gross amount with the calculation direction clearly labeled. Every computation happens entirely in your browser — no data is tracked, stored, or transmitted, making this safe for sensitive financial figures and business calculations.

Understanding VAT and Sales Tax

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied at each stage of production and distribution, ultimately borne by the end consumer. It is the dominant consumption tax system used worldwide, adopted by over 170 countries including all European Union member states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Australia (as GST), New Zealand (as GST), India (as GST), Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Mexico, Turkey, and many others. Unlike a traditional sales tax that is only charged at the final point of sale, VAT is collected incrementally throughout the supply chain — manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers each charge VAT on their sales and reclaim VAT on their purchases, with the final consumer paying the full tax amount and bearing the economic burden. For businesses and self-employed professionals registered for VAT, this means you must charge VAT on your sales (output tax) and can deduct the VAT you pay on business expenses (input tax), remitting only the difference to the tax authority. For consumers and unregistered businesses, VAT is simply part of the price you pay. The standard VAT rate varies significantly between countries — from as low as 7.7% in Switzerland to 27% in Hungary — and many jurisdictions apply multiple reduced rates for essential goods like food, books, medicines, children's clothing, public transport, and cultural services. Understanding whether a price is quoted including or excluding VAT is essential for accurate budgeting, pricing strategy, and cross-border trade compliance.

How to Use the VAT Calculator

  1. Enter the amount — Type the price you want to calculate tax for. If you are adding VAT, enter the net (pre-tax) price. If you are removing VAT, enter the gross (tax-inclusive) price. The field accepts any positive number with decimal precision.
  2. Choose calculation mode — Select "Add VAT" to calculate the gross price and tax amount from a net value (typical for creating invoices and price quotes), or "Remove VAT" to extract the net price and tax amount from a gross value (useful for expense reconciliation and verifying supplier invoices).
  3. Set the VAT rate — Pick a preset from the EU Standard Rates list (all 27 member states with their current standard VAT rates), choose from the Global Tax Rates for non-EU countries, or use the slider to dial in any custom percentage from 0% to 30% with 0.5% precision. The slider turns blue when exactly matching a preset rate and remains neutral when a custom value is selected.
  4. Read the three-line result — The output panel displays a clear breakdown: Net Amount (excluding tax), VAT Amount (the actual tax), and Gross Amount (including tax). The VAT amount is highlighted in a distinct accent color for immediate focus. A summary sentence below the breakdown confirms the exact calculation performed.
